Rotation Feeding

What Is Rotation Feeding?

Rotation feeding emphasizes the importance of providing your dog different proteins, vegetables, fruits and other ingredients on a regular basis to make sure your dog is getting the most complete nutrient profile possible.

This could look different in every household. If you feed kibble, you may choose a different recipe from your chosen brand each time you buy a bag. Alternatively, you may buy 2 recipes in smaller bags and rotate with each meal, by the day, or by the week! You could also look at supplementing in some home cooked meals or ready-made raw diets. Fruits and vegetables can be incorporated fresh or cooked from what you have in your fridge, of course being mindful not to feed grapes, raisins, onions and chocolate.

Here are some of the benefits of rotation feeding.

1: More Complete Nutrition

All dog foods, from raw to kibble are created with different ingredients from a range of sources. Each recipe will offer a different profile of protein, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. The quality of these ingredients will affect the nutrient level provided to your pet. Just like humans, dogs require these components from different sources and in different amounts. Rotating proteins are important since no single protein source can provide all the amino acids a dog needs. By consistently rotating different protein sources, you can help make sure your dog is getting the most complete amino acid profile.

#2: Variety

Variety is the spice of life! Can you imagine sitting down to the same meal two or three times a day? You may find with introducing rotation feeding that your pet becomes more interested in eating with the different flavor pallet and textures offered.

There are many great ways to entice your pet to try new recipes if they are hesitant. Try adding a delicious bone broth (see our blog for homemade recipe), add some freeze-dried food as a topper, even adding some fresh fruits or vegetables can offer some crunchy, healthy alternatives.

#3: Avoiding Food Allergies

A trusted source of ours, Dr. Karen Becker advises that rotation feeding can help prevent food allergies in both cats and dogs.
